Threads

A quick message to CEOs and any other executive decision makers about Threads.

If your communications team wants your approval to create a Threads account for your business, the right answer is “Yes please, do it immediately.”

Firstly, 5 fast facts about Threads in case you don't know what I am talking about:

  1. Threads is the new Twitter lookalike launched this month by Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram.

  2. Many say it’s much better than Twitter. Hopefully it will be less toxic, but time will tell.

  3. Threads may well overtake or even kill off Twitter. More than 100 million people subscribed in the first week, compared to Twitter's 350 million subscribers. At the very least, Threads is already a major competitor / alternative to Twitter.

  4. It's only available on mobiles, not desktops.

  5. You need an Instagram account before you can create a Threads account.

Apart from being an effective stakeholder engagement channel, Twitter and Threads are critical tools for crisis communications (what Top Centre Communications specialises in).

This is especially the case if a cyber attack takes down your traditional communication channels. Having Twitter and/or Threads allows you to push out verified information in the first minutes or hours of an incident, buying you precious time to then publish your content on your website which then becomes your "single source of truth".

In my mind, getting a Threads account in a no brainer, even if you simply use it to monitor what people are saying about you behind your back.

At the very least, take a minute to secure an account under your business name, before someone else "cyber squats on your handle" (i.e. creates an account under your business name).
